Mulch Calculator UK was created to solve a persistent frustration shared by British gardeners, allotment keepers, and landscaping contractors: ordering bulk gardening materials without accurate, localised figures.
Too often, homeowners rely on US calculators calibrated in cubic feet and dollar bags from retailers like Lowe's or Home Depot, or rely on rough guesses that result in half-finished flower beds or expensive leftover bulk bags blocking their driveway. Our tools are purpose-built for the UK climate, British bag capacities (50L, 60L, 70L, 100L, and 1m³ bulk builder bags), and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) soil management practices.
Our Editorial & Testing Methodology
Accuracy in garden planning requires more than raw geometry. Our proprietary calculation models incorporate physical material behaviour:
- Settling & Compaction Factors: Loose organic materials settle significantly after watering and foot traffic. We build in recommended 10% to 20% settling buffers depending on whether you choose coarse bark, fine wood shavings, or compost.
- Density Calibration: 1 cubic metre of chipped bark weighs between 350kg and 500kg, whereas rubber mulch or gravel weighs up to 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre. We account for weight limitations when ordering bulk bags.
- Horticultural Depth Standards: We specify functional depths based on botanical need: 5cm (2 inches) for ornamental borders and weed suppression; 7.5cm (3 inches) for winter frost protection; and 15cm–30cm for playground impact attenuation under BS EN 1177.
Mathematical Formulas We Use
We believe in complete transparency. Every calculation on this site follows verifiable geometric formulas:
- Rectangular Beds:
Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m) - Circular Areas:
Area (m²) = π × (Diameter / 2)² - Volume in Litres:
Volume (L) = Area (m²) × (Depth in cm / 100) × 1,000 - Volume in Cubic Metres:
Volume (m³) = Volume in Litres / 1,000 - Bag Count:
Bags Needed = Math.ceil(Total Litres / Bag Capacity in Litres) - Imperial to Metric:
1 Cubic Yard = 764.55 Litres = 27 Cubic Feet

Independence & Commercial Transparency
Mulch Calculator UK is 100% free to use. We do not sell retail mulch directly and are not owned by any single garden centre chain or aggregate quarry. This independence allows us to provide honest, unbiased recommendations whether you buy bags from B&Q, bulk bags from Wickes, or collect free wood chips from local UK arborists.
