Organic Mulches (Soil-Enriching)
Organic mulches decompose gradually, releasing nutrients into the soil beneath and feeding earthworms and beneficial bacteria.
- Conifer Bark Chippings: The UK's most popular decorative mulch. Bark holds moisture well, resists wind blow, and provides a clean, dark brown finish to borders.
- Arborist Wood Chips: Often available cheaply from tree surgeons. Hardwood chips create a durable weed barrier that is ideal for paths, shrub borders, and fruit orchards.
- Peat-Free Garden Compost: The best choice for feeding cottage garden perennials and no-dig vegetable beds. Acts as both a surface mulch and a soil conditioner.
- Pine Needles / Pine Straw: Naturally acidic, making them the premier mulch for ericaceous plants like rhododendrons, azaleas, heathers, and blueberries.
Inorganic & Permanent Mulches
Inorganic materials do not decompose, eliminating annual replacement expenses:
- Rubber Mulch: Made from 100% recycled tyres. Does not rot, blow away, or harbour woodlice. Popular for play areas and low-maintenance modern shrub beds.
- Decorative Stone & Welsh Slate: Excellent for gravel gardens, rockeries, and Mediterranean planting schemes. Always lay over a heavy-duty permeable weed membrane.
